Whether to prepare fields of loʻi kalo or to protect sacred places, there is great significance and power in the value of huliāmahi. As we huliāmahi, we gather, we organize, and we cooperate toward a unified goal. Ultimately, this goal is aloha ʻāina.
Celebrating contemporary stories of aloha ʻāina, Huliāmahi, Vol. 1 is the first of many volumes telling our stories. As a production of Kāhuli Leo Leʻa, the mele captured on this CD chronicle our community’s collective success by using the rule of law. With funding from and in partnership with the Hawaiʻi Institute for Philippine Studies, these mele also highlight Hawaiʻi’s unique laws grounded in Hawaiian customs and practices.
As we hear, enjoy, and eventually sing these mele, they become acts of aloha ʻāina – reminders of our role and potential as humans in this ʻāina (land) ecosystem. This CD’s proceeds also go to the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation to sustain their advocacy.
