Pulapula - seedlings, sprouts, descendants, offspring
Hoʻopulapula - to rehabilitate, propagate, multiply, procreate

The legacy of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole is a living one. As we look back at a century of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, we must not forget its future that we represent today. It is a future marked by younger generations who stand on the shoulders of those before them – always connected to the piko that grounds them to their ʻohana and to their ʻāina. Kalanianaʻole’s vision is made real.

In the same spirit of intergenerational legacy, this collection of mele builds upon those in the first volume of Mele Hoʻopulapula – in which mele written for ʻāina hoʻopulapula resurfaced for a centennial celebration.
Mele Hoʻopulapula, Vol. 2 features 10 new compositions for ʻāina hoʻopulapula across Hawaiʻi. Each composition was a product of a haku mele mentor and mentee – both having meaningful connections to the ʻāina for which they offer their honorific mele. In some cases, the haku mele duo consisted of mother and daughter; older and younger siblings; kumu and haumāna. In all cases, the indispensable value of pilina – relationships – brought these new adorations to life, to voice, and to our Lāhui.
Just as these relationships carry forth Kalanianaʻole’s legacy, may these new mele for Panaʻewa, Kealakehe, Paukūkalo, Hoʻolehua, Pālaʻau, Papakōlea, Kalāwahine, Kewalo Uka, Kapolei, Nānākuli, Waiʻanae, and Anahola strengthen our relationship to our ʻāina hoʻopulpaula and thus, to each other. Ola nā pulapula iā Kalanianaʻole!
Picture
“After extensive investigation and survey on the part of various organizations organized to rehabilitate the Hawaiian race, it was found that the only method in which to rehabilitate the race was to place them back upon the soil.”

- Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole to U.S. Senators prior to the passage of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act.

Panaʻewa Homestead in the misty Wailehua rain
A land verdant and beautiful on the island of Chief Keawe

Waiehu Homestead in the pinching of the Hōʻehaʻili wind
A land known for the four life-giving streams

Our thanks and love is for the growth-inspired Prince
Hawaiʻi flourishes because of your great accomplishments, O Kalanianaʻole

Kalamaʻula Homestead in the blowing of the ʻŪkiukiu breeze
A pleasant land, the beloved island-child of Hina

Waimānalo Homestead in the Alopali and Līpuʻupuʻu winds
A cherished land at Oʻahu, child of Lua

Our thanks and love is for the growth-inspired Prince
Hawaiʻi flourishes because of your great accomplishments, O Kalanianaʻole

Anahola Homestead in the whispering surf of Hālaulani
A land embraced in the sea spray of Chief Mano

Tell the refrain
For Prince Kalanianaʻole, this name song of praise

Picture
Older mele and moʻolelo continue to remind us of wind and rain names that many today have forgotten, never learned or are unfamiliar with. “Hilo Hanakahi,” “Waikapū,” and “Anahola” are among scores of mele – poetic texts – that are treasure troves of important aloha ʻāina information. So too, the ancient tale of Kūapākaʻa and the wind gourd of Laʻamaomao, and the contemporary literary gem by Akana and Gonzales remembering hundreds of rains through the islands, “Hānau ka Ua.”

Five ʻāina hoʻopulapula on five mokupuni are called out in this new mele, but the expressions of thanks and love extend to all Hawaiian Homesteads throughout Hawaiʻi Paeʻāina where our Lāhui continues to grow and flourish because of the selfless, tenacious, focused, diplomatic and ʻōpū aliʻi expert efforts of Ke Aliʻi Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole.

Cherished with pride is the lifestyle of the native
There is an embrace of the mountain ridges of the uplands
Palikea is there in the forest shade of the kīawe
Swaying in the Waikōloa wind

Chorus:
Beloved is Nānākuli, my dear home
You are a beautiful land of the local natives
A source of water allowing residents to thrive
May your memory endure, O Prince Kalanianaʻole

Many relax in the billowing of the sea
By which the moving shore is enjoyed by the residents
As the sudden rain showers caress the sea spray of Keaulana
Kealakaiihaʻehaʻe remains warm and pleasant

Picture
Prince Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole is venerated in this hoʻoheno for the Nānākuli Homestead. Lyrical depictions illustrate the landscape of our home extending from the uplands of Palikea to the seashore of Keaulana and Kealakaiihaʻehaʻe. This concept engages the traditional understanding for aliʻi – nou ʻo luna, nou ʻo lalo, nou ʻo uka, nou ʻo kai – and dedicates the entirety of our home to Prince Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole, in honor of his benevolence in providing residential homestead lots in Nānākuli and water access for our families to thrive there.

Darling child of Kaleiwohi
A descendant of Keaweaheulu

Homestead-life is blissful
In the shade of the kiawe
The Koʻiawe rain falls
Upon Lualualei

It’s a long morning climb
Up magnificent Heleakalā
A partner for Puʻuohulu
With the Inuwai wind of Mikilua

The rustle of the shore is heard
And I long to be there
The locals call out
Inviting me to join them

You are the beauty of the land
Beloved by all its people
We call to you, answer us
Kahanu, the incomparable woman

Aloha Kapolei i ka Lā Loa o Makaliʻi

Haku ʻia a mele ʻia e Snowbird, Kaleikaumaka, Kawahinemaikalanikiʻekiʻe & Kawaiolaikeahiaolele Bento

ʻOhuʻohu Oʻahu me ka lei ʻōpua

Lei kui na Wahine i ka malu o ka ʻōhai

Kilo ihola i ka lae loa ʻo ʻEwa
Kau ka maka i ka peʻa o ka waʻa
Pā mai Hānaiakamalama, ke kuhi lā
Ala hōkū ana i ka waʻa hoʻokele

Aloha Kapolei i ka lā loa o Makaliʻi
Kū i ka welona a Kānehoalani ē
Mālama ʻia nā pua ʻo Hawaiʻi nei
Lei pumehana a Kalanianaʻole

Oʻahu is bedecked with a lei of clouds
Misty Kaʻala made fragrant by the ʻUlalena rain
Glowing, the maʻo covered plains of ʻEwa
By the manauea-rich sea of Honouliuli

Palikea ridge, evergreen with lehua enclosures
The rounded blossom wreath dances in the Māunuunu wind
Beautiful Pālailai, the companion hill of Kapo
Lei sewn by Wahine in the shade of the ʻōhai tree

Stargaze towards the long point of ʻEwa
Set eyes upon the sail of the canoe
Hānaiakamalama reveals the way
Illuminating the navigator’s path

Springwater bubbles from within
It is Kāneloa who struck the land
Ancestral channels from Kaloʻi break forth upon the land
Endearing crescent-shaped lei of Kualakaʻi

Hiʻiaka stands on the top of the mountain
Descending to the slope of Puʻu Kuʻua
Until arriving at the border of Hoakaleiʻs living water
Binding together the roots seeded at water’s edge

Beloved Kapolei, in the long days of Makaliʻi
Thriving in the emanating heat of Kānehoalani
The Hawaiian people are provided for
A lei of affection given by Kalanianaʻole

We have so many reflections of aloha for our tūtū who loved her ‘ohana so much that she fought to ensure that she would have a home to pass on to us. The home that we reside in belongs to Elliott Ku‘ulei Keahi Makali‘i Whitford. Our kūpuna continue to guide us, through mo‘olelo, through access to our ‘āina and through the assurance that we have a way to remain connected to our ‘āina and ‘ohana. If we truly live in harmony with our ‘āina, we become part of the sustainability of that land. When we look into the spring of Hoakalei, who do we see? We are a reflection of our kūpuna and the promise of the sustainability of our ‘ohana.

Admired are the sweet potato fields of Mahana
Keʻieʻie, a repository of potent prayers

My thoughts recall Pālāʻau
Training grounds of Kamehameha’s warriors

So is told a refrain of love for Hoʻolehua
Homestead lands of Kalanianaʻole

“Nā ʻĀina Hoʻolehua was written to honor the significant wahi pana and moʻolelo in the Hoʻolehua/Pālāʻau homesteads on Molokaʻi. Our ʻohana has been blessed over the years to learn about these wahi pana. To continue to honor these wahi, we chose to capture their moʻolelo here in song. We hope that this mele is a starting point for keiki Molokaʻi, especially those living in the Hoʻolehua/Pālāʻau homestead to learn more about the special place we call home.”

Kealakehe is bordered to the North by Honokōhau, and to the South by Keahuolū, the prized lands of Queen Liliʻuokalani. The homestead stands in the protection of Mt. Paukūkalo

Mele ʻia e Kamalei Kawaʻa

Click to set custom HTML
Ohaoha wale ka nohona
I ka malu o Pihanakalani–
Hiaʻai i ka makani Lawe Mālie,
Kauaehahe iā Kaʻehuakamōʻī.

Hui:
Hanohano mai nō ʻo Paukūkalo, eō!
Ehuehu i ka poli o Haumea, ʻeā?
Mahola ka lau o ke aloha
Kupuohi i ka piko o kuʻu kulāiwi.

Uluwehi Mauna o ʻEʻeka–
Kilakila mai ʻo Mauna Kāne
Me nā lehua wai maka noe
I luna o Kauweloweloʻula.

Nolu ehu i ke ahe kēwai,
ʻInaʻinau i ka nihi Kualau–
Hālāwai i ka lae ʻo Nehe
Me ka wai aukahi mālie o uka.

It is absolutely joyous to live
Under the shelter of Pihanakalani–
One can delight amidst the Lawe Mālie breeze,
And gaze straight out upon Kaʻehuakamōʻī Bay.

Chorus:
Paukūkalo is truly glorious, yes!
Majestic within Haumea’s embrace, isn’t it so?
Love unfurls and expands like young taro leaves
Growing vigorously in the center of my homeland.

Mauna o ʻEʻeka is lush and verdant–
The poise of Mauna Kāne commands admiration
With its misty-eyed lehua
Upon the peak of Kauweloweloʻula

Dampened by the moisture-laden breeze,
So pleasant as the Kualau shower gently approaches–
It mingles at the point of Nehe
With the waters that flow forth together from the uplands.

Picture
Paukūkalo is a mele hoʻohanohano which honors the Department of Hawaiian Homelands community of Paukūkalo (Wailuku, Maui), the rich history of the region in which it is situated, and the distinguished legacy of ‘Ke Aliʻi Makaʻāinana’ Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole. Throughout this mele, the composers employ vocabulary and imagery which are evocative of the growth cycle of kalo, along with the names of places, winds, rains, and waters of the region, to cultivate a deepened sense of connection between the homeland’s beneficiaries and their ʻāina.
