Virtual CD Release for Kāwili
March 12, 2021

Mele Huliāmahi: Episode 4, Kāwili from Kanaeokana on Vimeo.

Mele Huliāmahi, Episode 4 features music from the album Kāwili, a musical project that reinterprets traditional Philippine folksongs as Hawaiian mele, re-envisioning the encounter between Filipino and Hawaiian cultures, peoples, identities and languages in Hawai'i. Through the feelings and experiences evoked in mele, the collection of songs exposes the unseen boundaries of Filipino and Hawaiian culture in Hawaiʻi — much of those boundaries a result of plantation-era racial policies that sought to divide working people and erase Indigenous society.

The Kāwili project strives to provide a space in which these boundaries are transformed into bridges, in which Filipino and Hawaiian hopes and goals can align in a place-based mentality.

Episode 4 is hosted by Alakaʻi Lastimado and Lance D. Collins, and features Keauhou, Ei Nei, Jeff Au Hoy, Kalena Delima and Kalaʻe Parish, Hoʻopono Wong, the Punua ʻOhana, and Eugene Tunac Marquez. Buy your copy today at mele.com!

Episode 4 was supported in part with a grant from Hawai’i Council for the Humanities and National Endowment for the Humanities.
